Several factors influence the skin’s pigmentation. The spots do not have all the same origin nor are all the same:
Lentigines or age spots, arise from intrinsic skin’s aging; or actinic lentigines, that result from an excessive and regular sun exposure
Melasma, as the result of an hormonal imbalance, soon after taking certain medications; or caused by sun exposure without protection during pregnancy (chloasma)
Post-inflammatory pigmentation, when it appears, for example, as a result of acne bubbles. The stains are due to an excess of melanin caused by inflammation.
